Thùy, 22, studying away from home, comes back every time to find a pair of slippers already waiting at the door — no note, no text, just her mother's quiet way of saying she remembered.

8 p.m., Thùy wheels her suitcase up to the front door after her first holiday trip back home. Before she can even ring the bell, she looks down — the familiar pair of plastic slippers is already sitting on the step, toes pointed inward, facing exactly the way she'll step in.

There's no note taped to the door. No text saying "I'm waiting for you." Her mother is in the kitchen — the clatter of pots drifts out, the smell of fresh rice slipping through the crack in the door. She didn't come out to greet Thùy. The slippers did that for her.

Thùy stands at the threshold for a while, not putting them on right away. Looking at the slippers, she remembers — for two years of living away, every time she's come home it's been exactly like this. Same spot, same direction, as if her mother had already counted her footsteps before she arrived. No one taught her mother to do this. She just remembers, and does it.

Thùy bends down and slides her feet into slippers still warm from the afternoon sun. She steps inside, the smell of rice rushing to meet her, her mother's voice calling from the kitchen: "You're back? Wash up, come eat." No question about whether she's tired. No long lecture. Just that — but enough for Thùy to know she's really, truly home.

"Home isn't a place — it's someone who knows you're coming back today."
