Tú, 24, drives deliveries from 7am to 6pm. He gets back to his rented room at 7pm, wolfs down a bowl of leftover rice, and opens his old laptop to pick up the JavaScript course he's halfway through.
Bank balance: 420,000 VND. Enough for gas and food through the end of the week. Nowhere near enough for the coding bootcamp he's had his eye on for three months — the one with a dedicated mentor, a clear roadmap, and a job-placement guarantee.
Other delivery drivers see him hunched over his laptop every night and ask why a shipper needs to learn code. Tú doesn't explain much. Some get it, some don't. Either way is fine.
Some nights he thinks about it: other people learn to code on decent laptops, with paid courses and one-on-one mentors walking them through every session. He's got a laggy old laptop and a neighbor's wifi signal he's borrowing that barely holds. But whether the code runs or breaks doesn't care which laptop wrote it — the result is the same either way.
He opens YouTube, opens freeCodeCamp, reopens the Stack Overflow tab still sitting on last night's unresolved bug. All of it free. He picks up exactly where he left off.
420,000 VND can't buy the bootcamp he's dreaming of. But it can't take away tonight, either — or his ability to keep typing the line of code he hasn't finished yet.
