4PM, Tâm, 19, a freshman who moved to the city from the countryside, puts on the shop uniform and starts a bartending shift that runs until 11PM. His parents are farmers, sending him 3 million VND a month when they can. Tuition is 8 million a term. Mornings are for lectures, evenings for the counter, sleep at midnight, up again at 6:30 — most days of the week, on repeat.

11PM, the last shift of the day, Tâm wipes down the counter, stacks the cups, switches off the machine. His legs ache after seven straight hours on his feet, hands still smelling faintly of coffee he hasn't had time to wash off. He counts today's tips: 45,000 VND. Add the shift pay, roughly 170,000 VND a day — twenty shifts a month comes to 3.4 million. Add what his parents send, and it just covers this term's tuition. Not more, not less.

Tâm doesn't mention the job to his classmates. Every morning it's the same line: "stayed up late studying, that's why I look tired." Not because he's ashamed of it — he just doesn't see the point in explaining. Explaining takes more energy than grabbing a few extra minutes of sleep so he can actually get up in time for class.

Apron off, lights out at the shop, Tâm bikes back to his room down a narrow alley, locks the door, sets the alarm for 6:30. He doesn't think about how much longer this has to go on, doesn't do the long math. Just tomorrow's class, and tomorrow's shift. One day folding into the next.

"No one sees how hard you're trying. But you're building your future, one day at a time."

Is there something you're quietly working toward that no one else knows about?
