Midnight on Friday, Hà, 20, just finished her shift waiting tables at a quán nhậu and got back to her rented room. Quick shower, then books open — there's a test tomorrow morning. Three nights a week, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Hà works after her classes end. Nobody in her class knows this. They just notice she dozes off on Thursday and Saturday mornings, and assume she's been up late on her phone.
Right now, her classmates are asleep, or finishing an episode before bed. Hà sits alone with her book and a cup of coffee that went cold a while ago without her noticing. Her eyes are heavy after four straight hours on her feet, but her hand keeps underlining formulas, rereading the same paragraph three times before it sticks.
Not every night is like this. But on the nights that are, Hà doesn't complain to anyone, not even her closest friend. It's not that she isn't tired — she is, tired enough that her hand shakes holding a glass of water. It's that explaining why takes more out of her than just sitting there and studying through it. She just does it. Whether people understand can wait.
3am, Hà closes her notebook and sets her alarm for 6:30. Tomorrow's test might not go well. But at least, in the moment she could have given up and gone to sleep, she chose to sit down and open the book instead.
