She quit school to raise him — and hid it for ten years

Ten years, and he still hasn't thanked his older sister properly. Not because he forgot — because he never knew he owed her anything. His mother told him, and his hands went cold.

She got into university at 18. She didn't go. The family could only pay for one of them, so she decided for everyone, quickly, the same way she used to slide the better half of a meal onto his plate. She went to work instead. Every month an envelope came home. In ten years she never once said "I quit school for you." She hid it so well that he grew up thinking that was simply how things were.

On her 28th birthday he handed her a small wrapped box and she cried. Only afterwards did he find the enrollment letter still in her cupboard — yellowed, pressed flat, kept at the very bottom. People who give up throw those away. She didn't. She just put it underneath, behind him, and left it there for ten years.

She held the gift without opening it. Just held it, for a long while. Sitting there, he understood that what she had been waiting for wasn't a present — it was to find out whether anyone still remembered.

A small gift can't pay any of it back. All it says is: I never forgot.
