AI took the job. What's left of me?

A longtime client sent one message: we're using AI now, thanks for everything. No complaint, no long explanation. Just that — and his main source of income disappeared in a single text.

Moment 1

That night he read the message three times, as if reading it again would change it. It didn't. He shut off the computer and just sat there breathing — not because there was no work left to do, but because for the first time he was afraid no one needed him anymore.

Moment 2

At 1am he was still sitting in front of the screen, scrolling through years of old files. Not looking for old work — just trying to find out, if AI can already do most of this, what's actually left of him.

Moment 3

The next day, a difficult client was still messaging, still complaining. His hand shook a little — he'd just lost his main client, and now this was all he had left — but he answered gently, the same way he always had. No one taught him to do that. It just came out on its own, even while he was the most afraid he'd ever been.

AI is better, and I'm really scared. I'll learn more. I'll become different.

AI isn't harmless. But there are parts of the job — noticing, staying patient, keeping someone from walking away — that no one has taught a machine to do yet. If your work just got replaced too, what part of you is still standing?
