The quiet grind: a café shift, 2am, and macroeconomics
June 26, 2026

10pm, her café shift over, the smell of coffee still on her shirt. She gets home, showers fast, eats fast. To her classmates she's just an ordinary student — none of them know she spent the last eight hours behind the counter.

Before she can even lie down, she opens her notebook. Her classmates think studying is all she does, so she lets them think it. The rest — the night shift, the rent, the late hours — she carries on her own, without telling anyone.

2am, her eyes stinging over macroeconomics, her phone lights up: one friend posting from a bar, another's story live from Đà Lạt. She looks for exactly one second, then turns off the screen. It's not that she doesn't want to go — it's that if she stops tonight, tomorrow she'll come up short on rent.

She posts nothing, tells no one. Not a single person knows how hard she's working to keep both the shift and her grades. But she knows. And for her, that's enough.
No post, no one sees me trying. I see it, and that's enough.
Some effort only feels true when no one is watching. Are you quietly working at something you haven't told anyone about?
