A September night, scrolling in bed. Everyone is showing off something — a promotion, a trip, a big thing finally finished. The thumb keeps moving, but the head has already started counting: and me?

Moment 1

Same salary, nothing saved. Add it up and the whole year looks like it stood still. But sitting with it a little longer, he notices the "standing still" is measured against what people post — not against himself. Put next to who he was three years ago, he's actually come a fair way. Just slowly, so it didn't show. He closes the app and starts counting again, this time from himself.

Moment 2

Four months left in the year. The list is all "not yet": no savings, no promotion. Everyone online seems faster. Then he remembers himself three years ago — shaking before every sentence, rehearsing every phone call. That's gone now. It isn't on any list, but it's real distance. He picks up the pen and adds one more line to the notebook.

Moment 3

His mother calls and asks what he's got to show for this year. He goes quiet, then answers: nothing yet, Mom. She laughs and says he used to cry all the time back then. For her, not crying anymore is enough. She doesn't count salary or titles — she counts her son. He corrects himself: I've got plenty, Mom.

Four months left, and it feels like too little. Three years back, and it feels like enough.

If you have to take stock this September — who are you measuring against?
