An old flame texts, and nothing moves

The lock screen lit up in a dark room, and the name on it was one he hadn't seen in a very long time. He picked up the phone and sat still, waiting. Waiting for his heart to skip, for that old familiar sinking to come back — the thing he'd always assumed would arrive if this day ever came.

Moment 1

Nothing came. And what stopped him wasn't the emptiness, it was what he remembered right after: somewhere in his phone there was already a reply. He'd written it a long time ago, edited it over and over, kept it just in case. Reading it now, he found he didn't need it — not because it was bad, but because it no longer mattered how he answered. The day he'd braced for had arrived, and it weighed almost nothing. On the shelf, the old photo frame still lay face-down where he'd put it years ago.

Moment 2

So they traded a few messages. How have you been, how's work, yeah, all right. Easy, weightless, the way you talk to someone you used to know and ran into by chance. It was only after sending that he realised he'd been cooking the whole time. The pan was still on the flame, his hand still moving, not one second of pause. The proof that he was fine wasn't some perfectly worded reply — it was that dinner hadn't been put on hold for anyone.

Moment 3

That night in bed he scrolled up through the old chat. On and on, longer than he remembered. And strange. He read those lines like a stranger's story — until he saw his own old profile picture at the top. The stranger in that conversation wasn't her. It was him, the version he used to be. He hadn't forgotten anyone. He'd just become someone else.

Old stories don't sting anymore. I get to keep them, and it costs nothing.

He closed the chat, didn't scroll back, and slept straight through till morning. Maybe what we call forgetting was never erasing at all — so which are you doing, trying to forget, or waiting to grow?
