There was only room for one, and she gave it to him

Every meal was the same. His bowl was fuller, and nobody ever mentioned it. Give way long enough and it stops being a choice — it becomes the shape of the house. He had gotten used to it. That is the part that hurts.

Moment 1

There was only enough for one, and his older sister left that one for him. She is 28 now and still hasn't bought herself anything. Ask her and she says she never wanted it anyway. He believed that for ten years — until the night he really looked at the plate pushed all the way to his side of the table, and the plain rice left in hers. She gave way, then made up a reason, so he could eat without feeling it.

Moment 2

On her birthday he handed her something. She held it and asked: you still remember that? Ten years and she had never asked for anything, so he assumed she had let it go long ago. Then he saw the drawer — the old folder still there, still bound with a rubber band, the edges soft with age. She hadn't given it up. She had only put it off, and told nobody.

Moment 3

One evening he tried to name something she liked. He could fill a notebook with what his friends are into. About his own sister he couldn't come up with one thing. Not because he never cared — because she never said. She had given way so long that even she no longer had an answer.

She never said it because nobody asked. Now he's sitting here, waiting for her to talk.

He pulled a chair closer, sat down, and asked. For the first time. And you — do you know what the person who always gives way in your house actually likes?
