Seven in the evening. He drops his bag by the door, eats fast, and opens the laptop.

The machine is old. The lesson is still where he left it yesterday.

Moment 1

A friend texts: what are you even studying for? He looks at it for a while. The reply box lights up, the cursor blinks — then he turns the phone face-down and goes back to the page. He isn't annoyed, and he isn't hiding anything. It's just that saying it out loud means explaining it, and explaining it turns it into a promise he owes someone else. This one, he'd rather only owe himself.

Moment 2

He opens the banking app: 420,000đ. Enough for food and petrol until the weekend. The course he's been saving in his head all this time — the enrol button still sits there, greyed out, unclickable. He folds the wallet shut and sets it down. Then he opens a free lesson instead. That money was never going to buy him knowledge. It buys him one more week of still being able to sit down here.

Moment 3

And the daytime looks like this. Ten at night, last shift, his hands already tired. The others leave one by one, chairs pushed out at angles, most of the lights off — only his desk is still lit. That last bit of work could wait until tomorrow; nobody would say a word. He stays anyway, and finishes it.

Staying late pays nothing extra. I'm paying it forward to myself.

Those hours don't show up on any payslip. But they don't disappear either — they don't end up in anyone else's pocket. They stay in him, saved up for the person he's going to become.

And you — what are you staying up to finish tonight?
