Purpose doesn't have to be big

Purpose doesn't have to be big — 1

He gets home, plugs his phone in at the outlet by the living room, and walks straight to his room. A strip of warm light is still on out there — nobody turned it off. He doesn't think much of it. It's like this every night.

Moment 1

The rattan chair by the window has a dent worn into the cushion, exactly where his grandmother sits all day. Dinner is still on the table under a mesh cover, two bowls turned upside down beside it. She didn't call out to him once all day — not because she didn't want to, but because she knew he was busy. She only said one thing as he walked past: it's less lonely when you're home.

Moment 2

Twenty-five, and he feels he has nothing to show for it. His friends have all gone somewhere far, posting photos from places he's never been. Then he finds her old notebook: shaky handwriting, dates, a few of them underlined in red pen. Those were the evenings he came home early. Someone had been counting all along — just counting something else entirely.

Moment 3

Late afternoon on the porch, she tells the same old story for the third time. He knows every detail by heart. But this time he stays put, tops up the teapot, and listens to the end. She isn't repeating it because she forgot — it's the only way she knows to keep him sitting there for one more pot of tea.

I've known that story for years. It's her voice I'm holding onto.

Nobody writes articles about afternoons like this. But in your house — is someone sitting in a chair right now, waiting all day to say one very short thing to you?
