Fourteen tabs open, and twenty minutes of sitting still
September 11, 2026

It was almost noon before she noticed she had been sitting still for twenty minutes. Not resting, not thinking either. Just sitting. Fourteen tabs open since the moment she turned the machine on, every one of them waiting, and her hands touching none of them.

Five days off, and the work had all landed in a single morning. That was the reason she gave herself. But if she was honest, she sat the same way on the light days too — opened everything, looked at all of it at once, decided it couldn't be done. What stopped her was never the amount. It was the act of opening all of it at the same time.

Twelve o'clock, nothing finished, her heart going like she had run somewhere. She picked the list up and counted again: twenty lines, and only three that were actually due today. The thing that had frightened her all morning wasn't those three. It was the other seventeen, sitting there, asking nothing of her and still heavy.

Friday noon. All week she had eaten lunch in front of the screen, telling herself she would eat fast and finish up after. The work stayed anyway — it does every week, no week has ever ended empty. Today's share was done, and that was enough to stop on. She left the machine where it was, stood up, and went to eat.
That pile won't clear this week. Lunch was never a reward.
The pile was exactly as big after that lunch as before it. Only she was different. When was the last time you let yourself stop without waiting for everything to be finished?
