September 5th, and the feed is wall-to-wall first-day photos. A friend's kid starting primary school, a cousin starting university, someone she used to know announcing a master's programme. She is at her desk, opening the same spreadsheet she has opened for six years, and it occurs to her that September stopped belonging to her a while ago.

Moment 1

It isn't the photos that sting. The photos only expose something that has been sitting there a long time: that file is six years old, and every row looks like every other row. Other people get a fresh year to walk into. She gets a ledger that runs from one year into the next without a seam. That afternoon she closes the feed and opens a search box instead.

Moment 2

The strange part is that those six years never looked like failure. She is quick, she is clean, she is good enough that there is nothing left to ask anyone. Two keys on her keyboard have worn blank. Only the payslip stays exactly where it was — and being that good at it, it turns out, is not the same as getting better.

Moment 3

The data course has been sitting in a tab since January. Six hundred and ninety thousand đồng. She was never short of it — what held her for eight months was that nobody calls your name into a classroom any more. That afternoon she pays. Not to change careers tomorrow. At eight in the evening, she sits down at the desk.

690,000 doesn't buy the knowledge. It buys a promise to yourself.

For grown-ups, September is just another month. If nobody is enrolling you this year, who were you planning to give your evenings to?
