Everyone gets a season to begin again

September 9, 2026

Everyone gets a season to begin again — 1

Seven in the morning, and her way to work goes past her old school. The gate is crowded, the banner is new, the uniforms aren't creased yet. She slows for a couple of seconds and keeps walking — eight years into working, September has just been another month.

That evening she sits at her desk and looks at the September calendar propped beside the monitor. Thirty squares, not one of them marked.

Moment 1

She remembers the smell of new books at the start of a school year. The feeling of opening a notebook with nothing in it yet. But the longer she sits there, the clearer it gets: what she misses isn't the school — she was never going back there anyway. What she misses is having one day a year that told her, out loud: from today, begin. Nobody hands her that day anymore.

Moment 2

On the shelf is the book she stopped reading in March, the ribbon still resting exactly where she left it. Six months, and the only thing that changed on it is the dust. She avoids opening it not out of laziness — it's the idea that opening it means starting over. But the part she already read didn't go anywhere. It's still as thick as the distance she covered.

Moment 3

She promised herself something back in January. It's September now, and the familiar sentence is still: next month. Looking at the torn-off calendar pages stacked in the corner, she finally sees it — waiting for a better starting date is the tidiest way to never start.

There is no better day than this one. There's only the day you agree to begin.

She picks up a pen and circles today on the calendar. One mark, and it's the only mark on the whole page. And the thing you set down back at the start of the year — is it still somewhere close by?
