A café shift and tuition he pays himself

4pm, class just let out. Tâm doesn't head back to his room to rest — he runs straight to the café, just in time for his shift. Stomach empty, textbooks still stuffed in his backpack. But the shift doesn't wait for anyone.

Moment 1

Before he can eat a single bite, he's already behind the counter. Tying the apron, he doesn't think too hard about it — he just works, because this night shift is the only thing standing between him and this term's tuition.

Moment 2

11pm, wiping down tables on the last shift, his legs sore from seven hours on his feet. He counts the tips: 45,000 đồng. Add the wage, add what his parents sent — just enough. He tucks the money into a cloth pouch, no celebration, just a long breath out.

Moment 3

The next morning in class, his eyes are still shadowed. A classmate asks why he looks so tired — he just says he studied late. No one knows about the café. He doesn't plan to tell them either. He just lets it be, and keeps studying.

No one counts the hours I stood. This term's tuition — paid by my own hand.

Some effort goes unseen, and doesn't need to be seen to count. Are you quietly carrying something you've never told anyone about?
