Love, built out of small daily things

Love, built out of small daily things — 1
Love, built out of small daily things — 2
Love, built out of small daily things — 3

For three years, not a single scallion made it into his bowl at the family table. He's been allergic since he was a kid — everyone knows that. What nobody ever mentioned is that keeping a bowl that clean means somebody sits there picking them out, every meal.

Moment 1

Then one evening he looked at the other bowl and saw it full of them. His mother eats scallions. She likes them. For three years she has been cooking the dish she loves, then quietly setting his portion aside — never bringing it up, never treating it as anything worth mentioning.

Moment 2

Some small things arrive differently. Every night, the same message: got home yet? Two years of it. He'd answer with one word and go to sleep, as if closing a form. Only later did he understand that the person on the other end only slept after that one word appeared.

Moment 3

And some come from strangers. Two years at the same lunch spot, and the woman behind the counter plates his order without asking. He assumed it was the privilege of a regular — until he saw her do exactly the same for someone who had just walked in. Remembering isn't a reward she hands out. It's simply how she treats people.

She never once said she loved me. She picked the scallions out, for three years.

Nothing grand happened in any of those stories. Nobody did anything extraordinary. Just small things, repeated until they stopped being visible — even to the person doing them. How many of those did you receive this month without ever naming them?
