The table is full. A bowl of soup passes across, chopsticks tapping against rice bowls. Then an aunt sitting opposite turns and asks: so what is it you do?

She answers. The table goes quiet for a beat — the exact beat anyone who works online knows.

Moment 1

Her dad steps in before the silence can settle on her: she works online, nothing steady yet. It sounds like a put-down. But the man saying it can't name his daughter's job either, and he said it anyway, just so the questions would stop. "Nothing steady yet" wasn't a judgment. It was the only sentence he had on hand. She smiles, and puts something on his plate.

Moment 2

Nine at night, sitting beside her mother on the porch. She opens her phone, shows her a video of hers that a lot of people watched, then explains slowly where the money comes from. Three years in this work, and this is the first time she's ever sat down and told her. Her mother asks about each part, asks carefully, a finger touching the screen and stopping there. It turns out she never lacked the will to understand. She had just never been told.

Moment 3

A whole evening of explaining. Her mother nods, eyes still somewhere else. Then she pushes a box of vitamins across the table and asks one question back: are you tired? All evening, her mother wasn't listening for the job. She was listening for whether her daughter was okay.

She can't say the name of what I do. She says: take care of yourself.

Some things our parents will never fully understand, no matter how many times we explain. But every time we tell them, they listen. When was the last time you sat down and told yours what you actually do?
